About the SDN
Established in 2003, the Swiss Design Network is the Swiss competence network for design research, connecting design researchers from Swiss universities of applied arts. The SDN fosters discourse and debate on design research in Switzerland and contributes to its dissemination abroad.

Grant Description
Recognising a need for financial support in publishing research within the Swiss design landscape, the SDN Publishing Grant aims to showcase innovative design research conducted within Switzerland.
This grant aims to showcase innovative design research conducted within Switzerland and caters explicitly to disseminating publications within this field. We support applications from undergraduate to Ph.D. levels to support upcoming (that is, previously unpublished) publications.
The grant awards a total sum of up to CHF 2000. Funding is solely based on the submission quality of qualifying applications. The proposals can be for publications in all Swiss national languages and in English.
The SDN Board will evaluate applications, and successful applicants will be notified by the end of March.
Guidelines, eligibility and assessment criteria
The abstract and budget form the basis for assessment based on grant selection criteria:
- Originality/novelty of the research
- Potential for significant/broader/sustainable impact
Applicants must submit an original text in English. Only applications submitted through the designated form will be accepted. The SDN Board reserves the right to reject applications not meeting criteria.
Applicant Eligibility
- Undergraduate and graduate applicants (Bachelor's and Master's alumni) must be associated with SDN Member Universities (see the list here)
- Ph.D. applicants must have Swiss residency, citizenship, or affiliation with a Swiss University or University of Applied Sciences
- The highest degree must have been obtained within three years of application (BA, MA) or must be obtained within three years of application (Ph.D.)
Grant Requirements
- The publication must contribute to the discourse in the field of design The research
- The publication must be available through Open Access
Open Access SNF
swissuniversities: Open Access - The applicant agrees to publish the work within two years of being awarded the grant, or they will return the funds
- The application must ensure they will obtain or have obtained further financial support
After Successful Application
- The applicant's abstract is published on the SDN website
- The applicant supplies images or visual material (if relevant) for publication on the SDN website
- Once published, a copy of the publication (open-access PDF) is shared on the SDN website
- The applicant's short biography and portrait (if relevant) is published on the SDN website
The SDN retains the right not to award the grant if the selection committee deems the applications unsuitable.
